Science (Core)
What will I learn to do?
All students will complete the core science modules. All science is taught in relation to how science works in everyday life. Assessment is a combination of exams and coursework. In addition students will then either follow the Additional Science course, which will allow progressions to traditional science AS/A2 Science or BTEC Science.
Core Science is broken down into:
| Biology 1a |
Chemistry 1a |
Physics 1a |
| Human Biology |
Products from Rocks |
Energy and Energy Resources |
| Biology 1b |
Chemistry 1b |
Physics 1b |
| Evolution and the Environment |
Oils, Earth and Atmosphere |
Radiation and the Universe |
Triple Science:
Separate Sciences will be offered to those students achieving level 6 or above at the end of year 9. The award is for 3 GCSE’s in Biology, Physics and Chemistry.
What skills do I need?
You will continue to develop reasoning and practical skills. You will learn how to analyse and evaluate information gained from practical work and other external sources. It is therefore important that you are able to express yourself clearly and have a sound undersatnding of basic mathematics. However the ability to think lodically and to apply scientific principles to everyday situations will be your greatest asset.
What is next for me after this course?
A qualification in science is recognised as being extremely important by colleges, universities and employers. The ability to understand the way our world works is essential to everyday life, not in the workplace but also within our communities and our homes. GCSE Additional Science can lead to further opportunities to study at AS/A2 levels.
