What courses can i study in Physical Education?

Within Key Stage 4 you will have the opportunity to complete a variety of sports related courses that will develop both your practical and leadership skills.  Courses that are available within core and Option PE include:

  • BTEC 1st Diploma – Only available to Fast Track students
  • BTEC 1st Certificate (2 GCSE’s)
  • Junior Sports Leader Award (JSLA)
  • Coaching Awards
  • Entry Level
  • Princes Trust

Physical Education is compulsory for all students within Year 10 and 11 so a variety of courses are available to suit all students that aim to develop students theoretical, practical and leadership skills.

BTEC QUALIFICATIONS (EDEXCEL)  

These courses are designed to allow you to further your understanding of sports performance and are focused on the factors which need to be investigated if performance is going to be improved.
The courses are assessed through 100% coursework and there are no examinations so you will need to be prepared to work hard and attend all lessons.
This level 2 qualification can be studied at 2 levels:

  • Certificate =     3 units = 2 GCSEs  (Core PE)
  • Diploma    =     6 units = 4 GCSEs   (Option PE)

Content
Units may include:

  • Health, safety and injury
  • Preparation for sport
  • Sports leadership

BTEC 1st Diploma also includes:

  • The Sports industry
  • The body and sport
  • Practical sport

Progression and career opportunities within BTEC

This programme is aimed at younger learners who want to progress on to level 3 study in sport and related fields e.g. BTEC National Diploma in Sport or Applied A Level in Sport and PE. Others aim for employment in the Sport industry as leisure centre assistants, fitness centre assistants and sports coaches

Please Note: Only students who are on BTEC Fast Track can chose PE BTEC Sport as an option.  All other courses are completed in core PE

Coaching and Leadership Awards (NGB)
Throughout KS4 you will have the opportunity to achieve various National Governing Body awards.  These awards will develop your sports specific coaching skills in some of the following sports.

  • Football
  • Netball
  • Rowing
  • Cricket
  • Rugby
  • Dance

 

Junior Sports Leader Award (JSLA)
The Junior Sports Leader Award (J.SL.A) is a nationally recognised award for 14-16 year olds. The Award develops a young person’s skills in organising activities, planning, communicating and motivating. We see this award as a brilliant stepping stone for young people to become involved in leading and coaching sport.
The syllabus is designed to develop generic skills which can be applied to a variety of sporting activities, as well as contributing to the student’s personal and social education.  It is a practical qualification in which student’s should demonstrate knowledge and understanding mainly through physical competence rather than written work.  All work is assessed by a teaching observing the student delivering small practical sessions.

Entry Level (AQA)
Entry level is designed to help students improve on their practical skills within a variety of sports.  These sports may include:

  • Football
  • Trampolining
  • Volleyball
  • Rowing
  • Badminton
  • Dance

 

All work is assessed practically and there are no formal examinations

Edexcel
Students will work through the syllabus completing assignments which will apply to the course. The context will be tought after school in year 9 and then as part of the option and core blocks of Y10. Once completed students will continue Pe lessons through coaching courses to provide the student with a qualification towards coaching in sport. Students will get a Level 3 BTEC if they continue into sixth form.
