This is a two year NVQ Level 1 and possibly a Level 2 Course.
What will I learn to do?
Students will study different units which are as follows;
Level 1: (Entry Level)
There are four units to study at this level.
- Health, Safety and Hygiene Students will learn about the Health , Safety and Hygiene within the Hospitality and Catering Industry
- Select and use basic kitchen equipment
Here students will be taught basic skills with regards to food preparation and how to use basic kitchen equipment.
- Identify the main food groups.
The section deals with the different categories of food. Recognition of foods will also play a part in this unit.
- Prepare food, cook food and clean work areas and equipment
This practical section allows students the opportunity to practice the preparation of food and for them to then cook it. It continues with appreciating the necessity of cleaning work areas and equipment afterwards. |

What skills do I need?
Students need to be enthusiastic, well organised, hard working and respond well to a challenge. They need to be willing to embark on their own independent learning as well as share group responsibilities at times. They must have already shown a commitment in Food Technology at KS3. They will also need to be flexible with start and finishing times.
On occasions they mat need to start early in a morning, continue after school or attend evening functions.
What is next for me after this course?
The NVQ Level 1 offers direct progression on to a NVQ Level 2. The qualification also prepares students for employment in their chosen career.
Possible careers include:-
Various aspects of the Hospitality and Catering industry, in a wide range of settings. These would include hotels, restaurants, fast food businesses, care homes etc.
