Health and Social Care is an Applied GCSE

This is a two year Level 2 Course and is equivalent to two GCSE’s grades A*-C

What will I learn to do?

A BTEC First Certificate is a practical, work-related course.  You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

All students take the two core units:

  • Communication and Individual

            Rights within the Health and
            Social Care Sectors

  • Individual Needs within the Health and Social Care Sectors

You take one specialist unit from the following list:

  • Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care Setting
  • Cultural Diversity in Health and Social Care
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care

            Human Lifespan Development

What skills do I need?

Students need to be enthusiastic, well organised, hard working and respond well to a challenge.  They need to be willing to embark on their own independent learning as well as share group responsibilities at times.

What is next for me after this course?

You may continue with a further 3 units, which if successful would give you a First Diploma.  Alternatively you could follow a BTEC National Certificate or a BTEC National Diploma.

            Possible careers include:-

    • Registered care homes
    • Hospitals and primary care units
    • Social work
    • Nursing homes
    • Medical Services

Assessment is ongoing throughout the two years and the final grades are awards on the production of portfolio work and the results of one test. You will be taught by a team of teachers throughout the two years who will be carrying out assessments continuously, therefore you will need to be very organised and have a very positive attitude to achieving as well as a good attendance record.
