What will I learn to do?
You will learn how to operate in a real salon situation follow instructions. Complete practical tasks first on blocks then on clients. Also there is theory work and assignments to complete and at the end of each unit there are also tests. All practical work is marked through assessment.

NVQ level 1 Hairdressing qualification is made up of six units, these are practical and theory based units.


You will study the following area:
G1 Ensure your own actions reduce risks to Health and Safety
G1.1 Identify the hazards and evaluate the risks in your workplace.
G1.2 Reduce the risk to health and safety in your workplace.
G2 Assist with Salon Reception Duties
G2.1 Maintain the reception area
G2.2 Attend to clients and enquiries
G2.3 Help to make appointments for salon services
G3 Contribute to the Development of Effective working Relation ships
G3.1 Develop effective working relationships with clients
G3.2 Develop effective working relationships with colleagues
G3.3 Develop yourself within the job role
H5 Prepare for Hairdressing Services and Maintain work Areas
H5.1 Prepare for salon services
H5.2 Maintain the work area for hairdressing services
Plus one of the following
H2 Assist with Perming and Colouring Services
H2.1 Maintain effective and safe methods of working when assisting with perming and colouring services
H2.2 Neutralise hair as part of the perming process
H2.3 Remove lightening and colouring products
H3 Assist with Perming, Relaxing and Colouring Services
H3.1 Maintain effective and safe methods of working when assisting with perming,relaxing and colouring services
H3.2 Neutralise hair as part of the perming and relaxing process
H3.3 Remove lightening and colouring products
H4 Assist with Perming, Relaxing and Colouring Services for African-Caribbean Hair
H4.1 Maintain effective and safe methods of working when assisting with perming,relaxing and colouring services for African-Caribbean hair
H4.2 Neutralise hair as part of the perming and relaxing process
H4.3 Remove lightening and colouring products

Salon Services

The units which make up the Level 1 Certificate in Salon Services are shown below. There are nine units of which five are generic and four are occupationally specific.

This qualification is designed for students who whish to follow either a Hairdressing or a Beauty specific route, but both qualifications will enable students to enter other areas of the service industry retail communications etc.

Supports all level 1 Hair and Beauty units

Contribute to health and safety in the salon
05 Introduction to hairdressing services
H1 Shampoo and condition hair
H5 Prepare for hairdressing services and maintain work areas
06 Introduction to basic perming and colouring
H2 Assist with perming and colouring services
07 Applying basic make-up
BT 1 Prepare and maintain the beauty therapy work area
BT2 Assist facial treatments
08 Providing basic manicure
BT1 Prepare and maintain the beauty therapy work area
BT3 Assist with nail treatments on the hands
09 Industry and occupational awareness
Covers Employment Rights and Responsibilities for Apprenticeships  

What skills do I need?
Students must like interacting with others and have good communication skills. An interest in fashion and being artistic helps.

What is next for me after this course?
