You can choose French or German as a GCSE option.

French and German are separate GCSE subjects. Each GCSE is a 2 year course and consists of 3 lessons per week.

The French and German courses attempts to put you in situations, which you may encounter in the future. For example, Module 2 involves the kind of language you need if you were to visit France or Germany, for either work or leisure purposes.

A wide range of resources, including CDs, video clips and computers will be used to develop your abilities in French or German.

French GCSE

What will I learn to do?

The course offers a chance to build on the progress and skills gained in KS3.  Pupils will follow a modular course covering the following 4 topics:

Lifestyle
Leisure
Home and Enivronment
Work and education

Pupils will learn how to cope in situations which they may face if they were to visit France for either work or leisure purposes.  They will also learn more about the culture and lifestyle in France.

Pupils need to be well organised and enthusiastic about learning a language. 

What is next for me after this course?

Pupils can study further at AS/A2 level in French or Business French NVQ level 3 and this could eventually lead to a university degree course or employment..  UCAS currently offers over 7000 language degree courses on its website.

Alternatively pupils may enter the world of work in a variety of roles.  At a time when languages are becoming more and more important for the economic and social future of this country, the opportunities which present themselves for language students are enormous.

German GCSE

The main areas of ICT used in French/German will be:

Microsoft Office for word processing and databases
Microsoft publisher to enhance presentation
MP3 voice recorders to improve pronunciation
The Internet for individual research
Interactive Software and Whiteboard



There are 2 tiers of entry:

Higher Grades A* - D
Foundation Grades C - G

The course is assessed in 2 ways in both year 10 and year 11:

Coursework 25%
Controlled Test 75%

It will be assessed on the following areas:

Unit 1: Reading 20% External exam
Unit 2:  Writing 20% External exam
Unit 3: Speaking

20% 2 controlled assessment tasks

Unit 4: Writing 30%

Units can be taken in Y10 or Y11 as appropriate to the student.
