What will I learn to do?
The course provides the chance to study several different aspects of business. Throughout the course different units will be studied which give insight into a different business functions.
Unit 1 - Investigating Business
This unit looks at a business as a whole, why it exists, what it aims to do and how it is organised. |

Unit 2 - Enterprise and Operations
This unit looks at how businesses seek opportunities for new ventures and how they can support and ensure the success of these ventures. |
Unit 3 - Finance in Business
Looking after your finances is key to business success. This unit looks at how businesses raise finance, monitor their expenditure and ensure the business remains profitable. |
Unit 4 - Communicating in Business
This unit explores the different methods of communication used in a business to ensure smooth operations and to get the crucial information about their products out to customers. |
Other units will also be studied to provide more understanding of businesses and ensuring their success.
This course is assessed solely through coursework. Students are required to complete a portfolio of work for each unit. There are no exams to take. Students who complete 3 units will be given a National Award in Business Studies which equivalent to 2 GCSEs. Students who complete 6 units of work will receive a National Certificate in Business Studies which is equivalent t to 4 GCSEs. Both qualifications are awarded a pass, merit or distinction.
What skills do I need?
Everyone has something to offer and enjoy in business studies because it draws upon such a full range of skills and aptitudes. Additionally, a flair for seeing things differently or originally and being creative in a wide range of scenarios would be advantageous. In other words it helps if you are “enterprising” and do not give up when you encounter a problem or some hard work!
What is next for me after this course?
This qualification is an excellent building block for higher study in the subject. It is also extremely useful for anyone moving straight into employment with training because it provides a background understanding of the way in which the organisations we work in actually function.
