All those involved in preparing students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life - in particular careers teachers, pastoral support staff need to be aware of the new GCSEs and consider how they might benefit individual students when developing learning and career plans for the 14-19 curriculum. |
 |
When preparing students in Year 9 for key stage 4 option choices, careers education guidance needs to pay particular attention to the reasons why Balby Carr School has included the new GCSEs within the curriculum. Attention should be given to the contribution you can make to the development of our students and how the courses build upon past achievements, and their place in the students' overall learning programme.
|
Advice to our students and their parents on subject choices pre and post 16 should cover:
- The role of the new GCSEs as a general preparation for work, at whatever point they choose to enter employment;
- The value of the new GCSE's as an introduction to a broad vocational area, rather than training for entry into specific occupations;
- Local and national labour market information relating to broad vocational areas,
- The demands of the new GCSE's, the size of the qualifications, the importance of time management skills and how to meet coursework deadlines.
- The number and overall balance of subjects taken by learners and their total work-load.
- The teaching and learning styles involved and the approaches to assessment of the new qualifications.

All staff providing careers education guidance should know the structure of the qualifications and the workload involved for students. |
