Assessment
You will be assessed by examination and course work depending on the subject. Most GCSE subjects have tiers of entry like below
Subject teachers decide which paper you take. They will access your work regularly so you can see what progress you are making and what you need to do to improve. Homework is an essential part of all courses.

Entry Level

Builds a basic level of knowledge, understanding and skills.
Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3, in a range of areas including National Curriculum subjects, P.E. History, Mathematics
Level 1
Basic knowledge, understanding and skills, and the ability to apply learning to everyday situations.
All GCSE grades D-G, ASDAN Level 1 certificates, basic and key skills Level 1.  Level 1 courses for example: OCR Nationals, BTEC Introductory, National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 1.
Level 2

Basic knowledge and/or skills in relation to subject or sector areas; gaining ability to apply learning to a varied range of tasks.

This is seen as the minimum level required by employers and is critical to going on to further study and higher level skills.

All GCSE grades A*-C, basic and key skills Level 2.

Level 2 courses for example: NVQ Level 2, BTEC First; OCR Nationals
